Braven Bluetooth speakers double as phone charger

BRAVEN is looking to stand-out from the Bluetooth speaker crowd with a new line that offers the versatility of integrated phone charging plus speakerphone and daisy chaining functionality. The BRAVEN SIX Series comes in three flavors - two aluminum models and a ruggedized unit - which boast between 12 and 20 hours charging time.

The sleek 6.25 in. x 2.5 in. x 1.75 in. (15.9cm x 6.4cm x 4.5cm) enclosures contain two HD audio drivers, left and right channel passive sub woofers and a duplex microphone for hands-free calls. The speaker output is 3 watts and there's an option to connect via an audio cable if your want to bypass the Bluetooth link.

The cheapest of the three models - the US$150 BRAVEN 600 - is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and promises up to 14 hours of playtime.

At the other end of the scale is the $190 BRAVEN 650 which looks just like the 600 but gets aptX and AAC audio encoding, more playback time - rated at 20 hours - and comes in a red or "Mountain Ash" finish.

Finally there's the $180 BRAVEN 625 which sports a rugged, shock-absorbing exterior, a waterproof bag and flashlight and a playback time of up to 16 hours.

All three models can be daisy chained for bigger sound and provide some emergency battery back-up for your phone via an in-built USB charging port. BRAVEN is now taking pre-orders ahead of a late June release.

Modular housing concept boasts 64 possible combinations

Italian Designer Gabriel Aramu has conceptualized a modular housing system that seems to offer endless possibilities. Dubbed "Sliding Hub," these prefabricated cubes join together to create a temporary housing solution for multiple situations. In the event that emergency shelters are required, the modules can be packed and transported to any destination. On arrival, the modules are easily joined together, with the flexibility to house individuals, small groups or large numbers without limitation. Each module incorporates an insulation system suitable for all kinds of weather conditions. In addition, the temporary accommodation units provide a comfortable standard of living, important to natural disaster victims. Constructed with steel reinforcements, numerous modules can be assembled together to create various sizes and shapes, whilst sliding them open creates large internal spaces. According to Aramu, the system can be configured 64 different ways, wh...

Green Racer: Elegant Eco-Car With Throw-Away Body

Old cars and car parts make up a huge part of the worldwide waste stream. A team of designers in the Philippines has developed a rather sophisticated response to that problem with this car, which they’ve named The Phoenix. The prototype has a body made of biodegradable materials that you can simply throw away when you no longer need the car. The gorgeous design looks like some kind of space-age bed, but it’s definitely built to rule the road in true environmental style. While most people only keep their cars for five to ten years, the biodegradable body of the Phoenix is meant to completely break down in the same amount of time – so within a decade this car could go from factory to the road and back to the Earth. While the body is simply thrown away, the metal chassis can be reused again and again until the parts wear out. The body is made of a mix of bamboo and rattan, so it’s doubtful that it would ever pass safety tests and make it onto the road. But it’s a love...

NASA discovered two Earth-sized planets

Scientists have for the first time discovered two Earth-sized planets outside the solar system, orbiting a distant star resembling our sun. This chart compares the first Earth-size planets found around a sun-like star to planets in our own solar system, Earth and Venus. NASA's Kepler mission discovered the new found planets, called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f. Kepler-20e is slightly smaller than Venus with a radius .87 times that of Earth. Kepler-20f is a bit larger than Earth at 1.03 times the radius of Earth. Venus is very similar in size to Earth, with a radius of .95 times that our planet. An artist's rendering shows a planet called Kepler-20e in this handout released December 20, 2011. An artist's illustration of Kepler-22b, a planet known to comfortably circle in the habitable zone of a sun-like star, in an image released by NASA on December 5, 2011.
